“Nearby”

I’m unsure if it’s new or not but this is the ‘nearby’ tab of the Flickr mobile website, as seen on my iPhone. I’d not noticed it before because I rarely browse Flickr on my phone and use the slightly disappointing Flickr iPhone app to upload while i’m mobile.

When the page loads you’re asked to give it permission to use your phone’s GPS location. If you say yes it gives you a map and a set of geotagged photos on Flickr that have been taken near your current location. Fascinating.

I really like this. The idea that you can browse Flickr by exploring physical locations is great.

I’m not entirely sure how useful the map is without the locations of the photos marked on it but I suppose it helps reinforce the feeling that the page knows where you are. Funny that it’s a Google map too - seeing as Flickr is a Yahoo! property.

Most bizarre is that fact that the mobile website has this feature and the iPhone app doesn’t. You’d have thought it would be easier to do. I really hope Flickr adds a nearby feature to the iPhone app soon.
