Synthetic legs have become a medium for self-expression, thanks to customization made possible by sophisticated technology. It’s a bold melding of modern science and fashion statement.

“First, designers have an intimate conversation with the customer about his or her sense of self. The fairing’s shape is dictated by a digital scan of the mirrored limb. In the case of double-amputees, Bespoke has used stand-ins. The form is laser sintered in durable nylon and can suggest patterns of lace, herringbone and more. Further adornment comes with chrome plating, leather sheathing, fabric coatings and laser etching.”

“From an unknown location, I break into IKEA’s computer server. In this nerve centre, the CAD files for every IKEA product are stored and are downloaded worldwide. By infecting the CAD files with the ‘Elephantiasis virus’ I have just designed, I can hack the entire range of products. The virus causes random  deformities, like lumps, cracks and humps, which only show up when the customer prints his product at home with his 3D printer.”
MERRICK by Daan van den Berg is a digital file infected with an elephantiasis simulation and then converted into tangible products using a 3D printer. Every lamp that is printed will therefore be different.

Shine by Geoffrey Mann investigates the reflective properties of a Victorian candelabra. The reference information was generated through documenting the reflection by using raw data via a planar 3D scanner.
When scanning a metallic object the laser is unable to distinguish between the surface and the reflection. The spikes represent the intensity of the reflection.
